Waste Challenge 2024

Dear Round Table Family,

This September, we are united as the Round Table Family, focusing on the Waste Challenge and participating in World Clean-up Day on September 20th. This is not just an individual endeavour but a collective effort to clean up our environment and contribute to a healthier planet. Together, we move towards a brighter future.

As the Round Table Family, we approach this month with five simple rules:

REFUSE what you do not need.
REDUCE what you need.
REUSE items multiple times or switch to reusable products.
RECYCLE what cannot be refused reduced or reused.
REVIEW your progress. Reflect on key learnings and adapt for personal growth.

We will focus on one rule each week:

REFUSE (2/9 to 8/9) – Critically evaluate your purchases and ask yourself: Do I really need this? If not, why not refuse it and help reduce waste?

REDUCE (9/9 to 15/9) – After thoughtful reflection during week 1, make conscious decisions to reduce your consumption. Look in your rubbish bin and see if you notice any changes with your more mindful choices. It’s always encouraging to see the results when we take action. Consider starting a friendly reduce-challenge with friends.

REUSE (16/9 to 22/9) – Let your creativity flow! How can you reuse items in innovative ways? Donate items still in good, usable condition to charities or charity shops. Repurpose glass, plastic, and cardboard containers to give them another life. Carry a reusable shopping bag. Reuse wrapping paper or gift bags. Convert old clothing, towels, or sheets into cleaning rags. Don’t forget to share your creative reuse solutions to inspire others!

RECYCLE (23/9 to 29/9) – If you’re short on time, or if creativity isn’t your strong suit, that’s okay! Now is the time to focus on recycling. Every small step is essential and has an impact! Start small, at home or in the office. The key is to take the first step and set things in motion. Remember, small steps will have a significant impact in the long run!

REVIEW – Always take time to reflect on your accomplishments and their impact. What have you learned? Did everything go as expected, or did you encounter challenges? The Review phase is not just about looking back but also about looking forward. Apply the lessons learned as you take the next, more informed step forward.

Remember, your journey and the five rules are not just for you. Share them with your family, friends, and colleagues. By doing so, you will inspire others to take action and create a ripple effect of positive change.

On September 20th, World Clean-up Day, choose a place with your Club to clean! Take action, whether it’s a park, a beach, a school, or another location.

Capture photos and videos as you follow the five rules and share the results on social media and with other organisations. Together, we will work towards a cleaner, healthier planet!
